Top Spots
This is the Caribbean's private-island capital. Mandarin Oriental Canouan brought full five-star polish (and a championship golf course) to a one-village island, with Soho House's Soho Beach House Canouan next door for the members crowd. Petit St. Vincent is the purist's pick — 22 cottages on a 115-acre private island with no phones, no Wi-Fi in rooms, and a flag system to summon staff. Palm Island runs a quieter all-inclusive on its own islet. On Mustique, the Cotton House is the only true hotel on an island otherwise made of legendary villas. Bequia, the sailors' island, balances the ledger with the chic-but-relaxed Bequia Beach Hotel and The Liming's contemporary villas.
High-End Dining
Dinner at the Cotton House on Mustique comes with the best people-watching in the hemisphere; Basil's Bar, rebuilt over the water, is the Wednesday-night jump-up institution (Jagger has sung here). The Mandarin Oriental's beachfront Italian holds Canouan's fine-dining line. On Bequia, book The Liming's open-air restaurant, then counterbalance with lobster pizza at Mac's and rum punch at Jack's on Princess Margaret Beach.
Little-Known Gems
- Tobago Cays Marine Park — five uninhabited cays behind a horseshoe reef, with a protected turtle-swimming lagoon; the single best day-sail in the Caribbean.
- Salt Whistle Bay, Mayreau — a double-sided crescent of sand 50 yards wide, palm to palm; arrive by boat before the catamarans do.
- La Soufrière volcano hike (St. Vincent) — a raw crater walk on the volcano that erupted in 2021.
- Dark View Falls — twin waterfalls reached by a bamboo suspension bridge, usually empty.
- Wallilabou Bay — the surviving Pirates of the Caribbean set, slowly weathering into the mangroves.
- Old Hegg Turtle Sanctuary (Bequia) — a one-man hawksbill conservation project running since 1995.
Best for
Sailing charters (this is the Caribbean's best cruising ground), privacy-maximizers who'd rather have a whole island than a club floor, and island-hoppers — the ferry-and-puddle-jumper network makes a three-island week genuinely easy. Not for travelers who want big-resort amenities and a short transfer.
